NATURE EDUCATION & RESEARCH CENTRE
Endau Rompin National Park, Malaysia

Location
Endau Rompin lies at the headwaters of Sungai Endau astride the Johor-Pahang border. It covers an area of 870 square km, about one and a half times the size of Singapore island. It includes parts of the Labis and Endau-Mas forest reserves in Johor and the Lesong Forest Reserve in Pahang.

The area contains a unique assemblage of lowland and hill rain forest with pristine rivers and varied wildlife. Besides possessing its own plants found nowhere else in the world, it is also home to the largest population of those highly endangered animals (e.g. Sumatran rhinoceros). This makes the area an important part of Malaysia's natural heritage that is badly in need of conservation. National Education and Research Centre

The Centre
The Nature Education and Research Centre (NERC), Endau Rompin became a reality with the collaboration and support of the Johor government, the Danish Corporation Environment and Development (DANCED) and the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS). Funding for the project is provided by DANCED while MNS is the consultant for the implementation of the NERC on behalf of Johor National Park Corporation (PTNJ).

Endau Rompin Eco Camp is located in Kampong Peta within the National Park Head Quarter of Endau Rompin nature reserve. This is the Nature Education and Research Centre (NERC) complete with dormitory for 80pax, library, seminar room and a dry laboratory. The accommodation for Eco Camp is a dormitory for up to 80pax. Surrounded by forest patches and nestled next to the Endau River, the NERC is a perfect place to appreciate nature and improve one level of environmental awareness. Near the dormitory, there is a visitor complex which houses the park headquarters, an information gallery, library, meeting or AV room, souvenir shop, multi-purpose hall, and briefing centre.

Endau Rompin is one of the very few remaining large tracts of lowland and tropical rainforests in Peninsula Malaysia with a core area of undisturbed natural vegetation which has existed for millions of years. The park is home to a vast assemblage of plant life, a primary sanctuary for large mammals like the Sumatran Rhinoceros, Asian Elephants, Tigers, Malayan Sun Bears, Tapirs and many other forms of wild life such as more than 230 species of birds, 43 fishes, 26 frogs, 14 snakes, 9 lizards, 3 turtles, and 179 butterflies, some of which are threatened with extinction and not found elsewhere in the world.

Main Attraction: Legendary Buaya Sangkut Waterfall

Buaya Sangkut Waterfall

The Buaya Sangkut is a five-step waterfall which is a six hour-trekking from the Visitors Control Centre along Sungai Jasin. The 40-metre wide fall gushes a million gallons of roaring water a minute from a drop of 120 metres.

According to legend, the Jasin River and the Endau River were once dwelled by were-crocodiles and thousands of dangerous crocodiles. The man-eaters often endangered the lives of the aborigine people in the area. Several attack cases and near death experience were a common story among the people who used the river for their daily activities. The ‘Orang Asli’ (aborigines) believed that the fear might be over if they could kill the crocodile king. After hunting for a period of time, the ‘Orang Asli’ finally caught the crocodile king and then threw it at Seganggong hill. The crocodile was unable to move as it was trapped at the rocky hill. The trapped crocodile caused the water to change direction to the Endau River. Finally the crocodile died and the waterfall was then named after the sank crocodile as the ‘Buaya Sangkut’ Waterfall.
